About
The Arborway Gate is one of the principal entrances to the Arnold Arboretum, welcoming visitors from the Arborway into a 281-acre landscape designed by Frederick Law Olmsted and Charles Sprague Sargent. The gate is part of the Arboretum's historic network of entrances, designed to connect the public with its collections of trees and plants.
The entrance is now being reimagined as part of the Arnold Arboretum's Entrance Improvement Project. Proposed improvements include a continuous accessible surface, restored historic cobble gutters, new plantings, benches, bike parking and a repair station, and stronger connections between the gate, Hunnewell Building, and surrounding streets. The project is intended to make this historic entrance safer, more welcoming, and easier to navigate while restoring elements of Olmsted's original design.

Look up at the top of the gate. Its decorative finial was inspired by the pineapple motifs traditionally used on early New England homes as a symbol of welcome and hospitality
